As we get older, if we’re not active and sitting around all the time, this is particularly a problem for elders with dementia because they don’t really have the drive to engage the way younger people do, you know? They might just be planted in front of the TV and then not complain. I mean, you could probably turn off the TV, and they’d still sit like that, but it’s not good for them. Many things can happen as a result but the biggest thing is that they lose their muscle strength, bone strength, and coordination. If they’re sitting with their knees bent, they can get their legs contracted. They can get contracted legs if they’re in a bed as well. So it’s important for everyone to keep moving, especially people with dementia because if they get to the point where they’re not walking, they may lose the ability to walk, and then they are dead weight to move, which is really a big problem.
